Competitive bidding requirement waived for Takaieu and Alekot power extension project in Pohnpei

A power extension project in sections of Madolenihmw and Kitti municipalities has been awarded an amount of $40,000 from the FSM Congress under infrastructure development.

The Federated States of Micronesia Financial Management Act requires that construction projects exceeding the amount of $20,000 be subject to a competitive bidding process.

However, given the urgent nature of the power situation in the named areas and because the Pohnpei Utilities Corporation (PUC) is the only entity on the island with power poles, construction equipment, technical expertise and other materials to undertake the project,  Vice President Alik L. Alik waived the bidding requirement on behalf of President Manny Mori on November 5, 2013.

"...any further delay in the extension of the electrical power lines to the communities will undoubtedly impact the lives of the people of Takaieu in Madolenihmw and Alekot in Kitti and nearby community", the Vice President reasoned.
